Caellum wins 2015 Avondale Markets Counties Bowl Listed NZ$50,000 at Avondale (NZ), 1100m.
Caellum was out as well as any from his good draw but allowed the leaders to get ahead while he settled to be handy on the rails but then was shuffled back to be worse than midfield. He got off the rails and received a lovely run before the top of the straight but switched inside to get clear look at the leaders. He seemed to be battling at the 300m but really got going inside the 150m to get the upper hand over pacemaker Statham just before the post in a fighting finish.
Statham took up the pace early and kept up a solid gallop deep into the straight. Had he broken clear at the 200m he might have held on, just going down in the last few fighting strides.
Riding Shotgun was denied a run (by the winner) at the 200 metres and was held up badly before getting going again, but much too late, for an unlucky third.
