Listed Phelan Ready Stakes, December 14 - Doomben

Bassillique produced an impressive debut performance to land the Phelan Ready Stakes at Doomben.

The first starter Bassillique ($11) did not have much early pace and settled back in eighth place.

He went to the rails rounding the bend and got a nice run through to third at the 300m before switching out to challenge shortly afterwards. He went to the lead near the 100m and drew clear to score by a length, being suited by a solid tempo.

Goluana settled fifth on the rails from his inside barrier (1). He got a split at the home turn, went to second on straightening, took a narrow lead at the 100m and fought on nicely for a good second on debut.

The outsider Boom Box ($67) showed good pace and led the field until half way down the straight and held on well for third, beaten just over a length.

The favourite Vienna Royale ($1.60) missed the start badly and was a clear last in the early stages. He was urged to recover and worked hard, very wide, to share the lead but trapped four deep to the home turn. He then tired after working so hard to finish eighth, beaten 11 lengths.
