Brisbane Best: Doomben – December 1

Capable sprinter Oink looks well placed to score a second-up win at Doomben on Saturday.

The Kelly Scheweida-trained gelding has his second outing this preparation in the Mark Cotterell Master Jeweller Class 6 over 1350m.

Oink made an encouraging return to the track a fortnight ago when runner up in the same class at this course and distance.

On that occasion he settled midfield before finding some trouble entering the straight but recovered to dash clear.

He looked a likely winner until collared in the closing stages by the in-form Femme Fireball.

Oink can be expected to have taken plenty from that hitout having won second up before.

He is also a dual winner at both the course and distance and James Orman stays aboard.

A wide draw is one potential hurdle but if Oink can find the right position in running he looks well placed to win.

Progressive filly Voila has each way appeal in one of the day’s features, the Listed Mode Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1200m.

Trained by Chris Waller, Voila has been well travelled over the past couple of months and heads north after competing at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival where she was only beaten half-a-length in the Group 3 Roses Stakes over 1100m.

That run came following a one-month freshen up after racing through her grades in Sydney where she won two of her previous three starts.

Although up against a field with some depth, her latest appearance produced her best Timeform rating yet and it was one that could see her competitive if she can take another step forward.
