The Melbourne Mail - October 29

Derby Day at Flemington is a smorgasbord for punters and the hardest part about finding a best bet for the Melbourne Mail was settling on just one.

The race of the day is undoubtedly the Coolmore Stud Stakes where the strongest group of three-year-old sprinters in recent memory go to post for a genuine Group 1 clash but we will look to build up the bank before then and think that Shiedel is the horse that can do that for us in the third race on the card.

After bumping into a white hot Hellbent second up Sheidel found the right race last time and made the most of it, winning well and returning a really solid overall figure.

While the field she meets at Flemington on Saturday is big in numbers, and certainly a competitive, if she is able to replicate her last two ratings she will set the bar nice and high for her rivals.

One of they key races feeding into this was the race won by Palazzo Publico at Caulfield - a messy race that rated lengths below the race that Sheidel won en route to Flemington. We'd be keen to back her to beat that field and it's the new blood that we would be most concerned about - namely Super Cash, Rule The River and Viddora.

There's more than enough meat on the bones of Sheidel's early price to gamble her, and her premier exposed form, against that group.

For an each way play we go to the best betting race on the card and arguably the best betting race of the carnival so far - the Cantala Stakes.

It's a great race and there are plenty of angles and edges for punters to explore. For the Melbourne Mail we are going to throw up Mackintosh as one currently trading at a price that should be bet.

He was just second up into a hard run Epsom, coming off a first up peak and returning another peak there. The month between runs off that tough effort is ideal and he should have plenty more to offer third up and given his progressive profile.

At around the $10 mark he is one to start the book with on a race where the betting will no doubt be spirited.
