We are on the heels of the Adelaide major races and this week sees the main Derby lead up.

That race is the Chairman’s Stakes and in that we find the horse we like for the weekend.

Magicool has now come solid this prep after a series of conditioning runs.

He sat on the speed over the 2000m at Caulfield and got out on the home turn. In the end he just held on but not sure he is a sit sprint horse.

Likely to be better when able to get rolling when he needs to but at least from this draw won’t be expending any extra energy.

He’s bred to run a trip so the SA Derby is the obvious race and his Victoria Derby run was very solid for a race of that standard.

Just hoping he has taken no ill effect from last week but Burgundy Blast has credentials to run a race for us in the Nitschhke Stakes.

After a nice win first up, he was smashed near the fence and knocked out of the Redelva last week.

That was his first start since being gelded so we never got the chance to see how he’d gone from that change.

Eclair Choice won that race and back in September, Burgundy Blast started 7-4 on but had a poor post-race recovery when beaten two lengths by that same horse so the form stacks up.

So he might end up the shorter of the two we’ve found.
