Gosford trainer Kylie Gavenlock is hoping Thursday’s Wyong meeting will be a good launching pad for her debutante filly Kakahi Lass.
The Magic Albert filly spent 12 months in the paddock recovering from a series of niggling injuries and is ready to put her best foot forward after a 3.8 length trial win at Gosford on June 24.
“The majority of the field were two-year-olds so she had a bit on them.”
Kakahi Lass was a convincing 2.5 length trial winner at Wyong in November of 2012 but with the support of the owners Gavenlock decided to give her a lengthy spell.“She had quite a few issues so we decided to put her away for 12 months. She showed us enough to think she could be handy and I didn’t want to push her.
“She spelled very well. She’s been back in work around three months and I’ve taken her along slowly.“I didn’t have a specific race picked out because I wanted to let her tell me when she was right to go.
“This Wyong race fitted in really well after the trial.”Kakahi Lass is raced by Stephen Rose and Siro Yamashita, long time clients of the Gavenlock stable.
“I have been training for Siro for around 30 years and we have had quite a few wins together,” Gavenlolck said.“I had horses for Stephen’s father so we have had a long association as well.
“They have been very patient with this girl so hopefully it will pay off.”Kakahi Lass, out of Charming Lass, was purchased after the trainer saw her at Goanna Downs at Scone.
“When I saw her I fell in love with her,” Kylie said. “I have had a lot of luck with progeny out of the dam which was another bonus.”Kakahi Lass will be ridden by Nathan Thomas, who has partnered her in both her trials, and has drawn five in a field of 11.
Kakahi Lass wil meet the Bjorn Baker trained Quartzite, who was narrowly beaten at Wyong in February of 2013 and recently resumed from a lengthy spell.Quartzite, two be ridden by Jason Collett, has had two trials, winning the latest on June 23 by an impressive six and a half lengths.
