The next major of the golfing calendar is here, as the PGA Tour's US Open rolls into Pinehurst Golf and Country Club in North Carolina.

As the eyes of the golfing world focus on the Pinehurst No.2 course, most are also watching one man – the incomparable Scottie Scheffler.

Rarely does golf become a one-man sport, and yet Scheffler's dominance has seen him develop a grip on the top that both excites and unnerves all around.

He enters the US Open as strong 4/1 favourite and in good form, having sealed his fifth PGA Tour win of the season at the Memorial Tournament last weekend.

He already has one major to his name this season, having claimed his second Masters in April, has finished outside the top 10 only once, and has been inside the top seven in his last three US Opens.

All that threatens to mean the US Open could be a coronation - but who will attempt to swoop in a steal the crown?

As per usual with a major, Rory McIlroy is the centre of much media attention. It is nearly a decade since he last won one of the big four tournaments, but he remains one of the finest in the world.

In the build-up, the Northern Irishman has spoken about how he believes his next major – whenever that does eventually come – will likely be on a fast and firm surface, and Pinehurst is just that. Priced at 11/1, McIlroy enters second for driving distance, third for shots gained overall.

Greens in regulation will be a key stat, but McIlroy is down in 66th while Scheffler tops the list. The World Number 1 is also on top for putting average and Birdie (or better) conversion rate and he has the shortest scrambling average to hole.

Xaunder Schauffele, Colin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland form a trio of next contenders in the eyes of the bookies, and can all be found around the 14/1 mark. All three are available at around 6/5 or 6/4 for a top 10 finish.

Morikawa could be the most interesting, his driving accuracy is the best around and will come into play on the hard fairways plus he enters in good form after finishing second to Scheffler at Memorial, plus fourth place finishes at Charles Schwab and the PGA Championship. He is 7/2 for a Top 5 result.
