Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney and provincial barrier trials at Rosehill on June 20 and Hawkesbury on June 21.

HAWKESBURY June 21

Inner Track; Good 3

15 Heats – 2 x 1250m (2 Open); 5 x 1000m (2 Open; 2 2YO; 1 Maiden); 8 x 800m (2 Open; 5 2YO; 1 Maiden)

It's been quite a while since a set of trials were run a Good 3. As a result we got some quick time and big margin wins from promising types who appreciated the firm conditions.

JUKEBOX FLYER (Claire Lever): Trialled well leading into a smart debut win at Newcastle in February and looks capable of going on with it after resuming with a very sharp 3.5 lengths win in her 800m heat (47.85; 32.92). Lot to like about the way this filly extended easily to put several lengths on her rivals from the turn.

STARSPANGLEDANCER (Blake Ryan): A brilliant 12 lengths win in the fastest 800m heat (46.63; 32.63) was a huge improvement on the form this unraced filly displayed in her first trial in January. She led by three lengths after 100 metres and just kept running. Will take catching over a short course if she shows this speed in her races.

SURREAL LILY (Brad Widdup): Expect big improvement from this maiden 3YO filly on her first start in May if you can trust the pace she displayed to record an impressive win in her quick 800m heat (47.15; 32.99). Did it easily to score by more than seven lengths.

ROSEHILL June 20

13 Heats – 3 x 1030m (2 Open; 1 2YO); 10 x 900m (1 Open; 8 2YO; 1 Maiden)

With nine of the 13 heats catering for late season two-year-olds there should be plenty to look forward to out of this session.

LOVE TAP (Richard & Will Freedman): The big grey failed to fire first-up in Melbourne but was back on his game to post an easy five lengths win in his 1030m heat (62.19; 34.79), indicating he will be a lot fitter next time out. Took up the running to lead comfortably and would like to see him ridden this way the next time he goes to the races.

SHADES OF ROSE (Bjorn Baker): This unbeaten filly by Rubick is a genuine talent. She won her first three starts in January and February, graduating from country wins to a city success, and this effort showed she had come on nicely from her recent first-up trial when she was given a soft time. This time she tracked the leader before accelerating with the style at the 400m to race clear and run to the line almost five lengths clear under a quiet ride from Tim Clark in easily the fastest of the 10 heats over 900m (53.09; 34.02). PASSEGIATA ( Bjorn Baker): This unraced Winning Rupert juvenile filly could be a winter star if she runs up to her trial form. She's now won two trials in great style with this 900m heat win a brilliant piece of work as she led at her leisure before zipping home over the last 400m in a very fast sectional (52.23; 33.98) that saw her put an 8.5 lengths margin on her rivals. It's form that says she must win races.

The 2YO heats created the most interest with several youngsters showing good potential.

DAME CARTLAND doesn't have the brilliance of Passegiata but she has race experience with one placing from starts and looks a nice winter prospect for the Waterhouse/Bott after winning her 900m heat (54.57; 34.85) with something in hand. Stablemate BURNT ORANGE worked keenly to narrowly win her heat (55.18; 35.13) in slower time.

The Hawkes stable won 900m heats with AIRMAN (54.79; 35.24) and GOLDEN AGE (55.34; 35.53), two strong unraced geldings by I am Invincible who showed they had come on nicely since their first trials while the Snowdens should place the well performed ALPHA ONE to advantage after his comfortable heat win (55.22; 35.23).

There were a number of other eye catching efforts in the juvenile heats with CARDONE, I AM JADE, ROTORUA and WAVERIDER BUOY among those going into the blackbook.

CINQUE TORRI is worth following on the strength of his fastest 1030m heat win (62.04; 34.49) while the maiden heat win by BOSTON CITY in his 900m heat 54.35; 34.84) indicates that he could be a big improver on the form he displayed in his first race start last month.
