The Kris Lees trained Guard Of Honour made it two wins in succession when taking an important step up in the Listed Schweppes Heritage Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

The Northern Meteor colt was well placed by Hugh Bowman settling third on the rails as the $3.00 favourite Tango Rain and Kerrin McEvoy led after crossing from the wide draw.

Bowman eased three wide coming off the turn and sent Guard Of Honour up to the leaders and then he waited. Legerity was the leader at the 200m, but then Bowman sent his colt forward to take over.

Flash Fibian made a determined challenge on the outside from the rear of the field, with Hair Trigger between them, but Guard Of Honour held on for a half-head win. The margin to Hair Trigger was a head.

Lees started Guard Of Honour in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes over 1100m back in January but the colt finished last. However, he returned with a win over 1000m at Warwick Farm on June 15th and took the next step up on Saturday.

Lees said he will consider the lifting the game further for Guard Of Honour in the $300,000, Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, October 1st, and possibly yet again for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 29th.
