From The Stewards’ Room – August 27

Racing and Sports have scanned the stewards’ reports to find the key information punters need to know from Australian racing on Saturday August 27.

Rosehill:

Northern Journey (Race 1): slow to begin. Approaching the 1800m was steadied to avoid the heels of Mandalong Kiss (A Banks), which shifted in when not quite clear. A Banks was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. When questioned App. D Panya explained that her instructions had been to be prominent and to commence her run from the 700m. She added she was able to lead on her mount in the early stages and when pressured by Erika in the middle stages she relinquished that position to that runner near the 1200m. App. Panya further stated that near the 900m she shifted out and improved in accordance with her instructions.

Firebird Flyer (Race 1): knuckled over on jumping. Overraced throughout the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Firebird Flyer, App. J Innes Jr stated his instructions were to take up a midfield position, but he was specifically told not to go to the fence. He added as a consequence in the early stages he remained racing to the outside of Malleable and when that runner stayed one off he was obliged to race three wide without cover in the early stages, which resulted in Firebird Flyer overracing. He added throughout the early part of the back straight when Malleable stayed one off his mount continued to overrace until near the 1200m where he was able to obtain cover on the back of My Giuliano. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small wound to the near-fore fetlock.

Cocoexcel (Race 3): hampered on jumping when Evacuation, which began awkwardly, shifted in. Rider H Bowman stated that the filly, which was stepping up in grade today, may not have run out a strong 1400m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated that Cocoexcel had pleased the stable since winning at Warwick Farm on 3 August 2016 and he agreed with the assessment of H Bowman that the filly did not run out the 1400m journey. Mr Duckworth advised the stable now intends to drop the filly back in distance at its next start. He undertook to report back on the progress of the filly.

Ocean Grand (Race 4): slow to begin. Near the 200m was checked when disappointed for a run between Fifteen Sunflowers and Atlantic Sentinel. Ocean Grand was then held up for some short distance thereafter before shifting out to obtain clear running. Ocean Grand was then again steadied at the winning post away from the heels of Farah (J Collett), which shifted in slightly. J Collett was advised to exercise care.

Beside You (Race 4): shortly after the start had to be steadied when crowded by Alliterate (G Ryan), which shifted in when not clear. G Ryan was advised to exercise more care. Beside You then overraced in the early and middle stages and near the first turn had to be restrained to avoid the heels of Akasaki. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Rose Of Man (Race 5): slow to begin. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight.

His Majesty (Race 6): began awkwardly and then was crowded by Encostanati, which ran out, and consequently lost ground (2L).

Impending (Race 7): near the 150m was inconvenienced when crowded between El Divino and Manolo Blahniq, which was taken out by Astern (J McDonald), which shifted out under pressure. J McDonald was advised to exercise more care.

Ruling Dynasty (Race 8): slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, G Schofield stated that his mount travelled comfortably in the early stages, however when he shifted out to improve from the 800m and attempted to follow the winner, Sense Of Occasion, Ruling Dynasty did not respond to his riding from that point and was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings stated that Ruling Dynasty had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and was at a loss to explain its disappointing run. The Stewards ruled that Ruling Dynasty must trial prior to its next race start.

Allergic (Race 8): held up for clear running in the straight and could not be fully tested.

Cannyescent (Race 9): began awkwardly. Rider G Schofield stated that, although his mount travelled three wide without cover, it travelled comfortably in the run, but in his view the gelding was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Ms G Englebrecht stated Cannyescent had pleased the stable since its first up run at Canterbury on 10 August 2016 and could offer no explanation for today's performance. Ms Englebrecht undertook to report back on the condition of the gelding subsequent to the race and the future race plans.

Labdien (Race 9): for a short distance approaching the 1000m raced keenly. Rider H Bowman stated he followed Cannyescent into the straight and, after improving to its outside, Labdien worked to the line well and in his view was looking for further distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Ever So Natural (Race 9): rider J Parr stated the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was that the gelding had raced like a tired horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying thumps and a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr C Bashford was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Ever So Natural racing again. Mr Bashford indicated the gelding will now be spelled.

Sandown:

Sebrikka (Race 1): Slow to begin. Lay in under pressure in the straight. Apprentice Regan Bayliss reported the filly is now looking for 1600 metres. Stable representative G Fennessy reported that on return to the stable Sebrikka underwent a veterinary examination and was found to have suffered a fracture to the third carpel bone in the near fore knee and will be out for the remainder of the spring. A veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again.

All Cerise (Race 3): Raced wide without cover. Rider Ben Melham reported the mare did not feel right in its action. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with trainer Chris Waller.

Gabella (Race 3): Held up rounding the home turn before gaining clear running near the 50 metres.

Shiraz (Race 5): Rider Luke Nolen reported his mount did not feel right in its action when placed under pressure. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality and a sample was taken for analysis. Stewards will follow up with trainer Tony McEvoy.

Hellbent (Race 5): Rider Damien Oliver reported his mount did not appreciate racing tight amongst other runners. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Awake In Grinzing (Race 6): Rider Ben Melham stated that it was not his intention to be in a forward position, however, his mount raced too keenly in the early stages to do otherwise.

Tarzino (Race 7): A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame on the off hind. A veterinary clearance is required prior to Tarzino racing again.

Provocative (Race 8): Jumped away awkwardly and then shifted out abruptly before being straightened by its rider. Hung out throughout the race. Rider Damien Oliver was of the view that the mare may be better suited over a longer distance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Miss Softhands (Race 9): Over raced in the early and middle stages. Lay in rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. Held up rounding the home turn and was unable to gain clear running in the straight and as a result went to the line not being fully tested. When questioned rider Steven King stated his instructions were, if possible, to go around the field, however, due to the slow pace early he was not in a position to be able to do so leaving the 600 metres and therefore opted to try and gain a run through the field but was disadvantaged with his mount continuing to lay in and ultimately failed to get a run in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Jessy Belle (Race 9): Held up rounding the home turn and was unable to gain clear running in the straight and as a result went to the line untested.

Kayjay's Joy (Race 9): Rider Damian Lane reported his mount changed legs in the straight, became unbalanced and then failed to finish off the race. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Don't Doubt Manma (Race 9): Held up rounding the home turn before shifting to the outside of Kayjay’s Joy passing the 200 metres to gain a clear run.
