Olive Stable Firing On All Cylinders

A smaller approach to training has culminated with one of Nick Olive's best starts to any season, much to the delight of the Canberra based trainer.

Currently striking at 16 per cent, Olive boasts an impressive strike rate of 25 per cent at Thoroughbred Park this season.

"We've had a great run at Canberra this season," Olive said.

"Our winning strike rate is great and its probably one of the best starts to a season we have ever had."

Fellow Canberra based trained Keith Dryden currently leads the Canberra Racing Club's Trainer's Premiership on 13 wins, one ahead of Olive.

In a bid to clinch his seventh title in nine years, Olive remains well on track, given he has only saddled up 48 runners at the half way point.

Admitting they are down on numbers, Olive felt they should have an influx of runners in the near future.

"We are a somewhat smaller stable now, we're not as big as we used to be a few years ago, but I'm really happy with how we are travelling," Olive said.

"We are a bit light on at the moment, we turned a heap of horses out about three weeks ago, so we've got a few coming back into work now.

Two handy gallopers that are back in the stable are The Waco Kid and Without A Shadow, both likely to be targeted towards the Country Championships.

"He's [The Waco Kid] isn't far off resuming, he had a jump-out on Wednesday," Olive said.

"At this stage we've just got to try and find a race for him and go from there.

"In regards to the Country Championships, he needs to win probably another one or two races to get into that race.

"That's our plan at the moment, so hopefully it all falls our way."

Handy mare Without A Shadow raced in great order last preparation and Olive is confident she can raise the bar again.

"Without A Shadow is also looking to head to the Country Championships," Olive said.

"She's come on really well off a break, she's put on a bit of size and has strengthened up — she's definitely heading in the right direction."
