Having saluted impressively over five furlongs in both starts back this time in the son of Eavesdropper was tried over 1300m for the first time in his career and it proved a masterstroke.

"We were going to come up for the 1000m race last week but we figured we'd step him up in trip," McIlrick said.

"We liked the idea of the bigger track and given he is a big horse we thought the one turn here would suit him better."

Settling towards the tail of the field in a slowly run race Got The Goss appeared in trouble rounding the home turn before showing a sharp turn of foot to quickly pick up the leaders and draw away for a soft win.

Running his last 600m in a slick 34.84 seconds the son of Eavesdropper defeated the Gerald Ryan trained El Sasso by one-and-a-quarter lengths with Sabino Speed rounding out the minor placings.

Now a victor of five of his six career starts to date McIlrick is confident he has come back bigger and better as a three-year-old.

"He's been going a lot better he's a lot stronger this time round," McIlrick said.

"Last time he failed in town I think he was at the end of his preparation given his tough run at Wagga in the lead up.

"The horse [Pitcrew] that beat him on that occasion went on to be alright.

"We spelled him and he's come back pretty good I think."

Appearing very well placed after John Kissick's three kilogram claim the apprentice rider was full of praise for Got The Goss.

"I would have liked to have settled a bit closer, he's just very green and new," Kissick said.

"He kept having a look around but what a turn of foot.

"I went from not travelling to having a full stick of horse underneath me."
