Smerdon Pair Set For Queensland Classics

A Queensland classic double will be the aim for the Robert Smerdon-trained stablemates Westsouthwest and Red Typhoon if they perform to his expectations at Caulfield on Saturday.

The promising staying three-year-olds are in line to head to Brisbane for G1 assignments after they race over 1600m on the Caulfield card.

South Australian Derby placegetter Westsouthwest is on trial for the Qiueensland Derby while SA Fillies Classic winner Red Typhoon has the Queensland Oaks on her agenda.

The $500,000 Queensland Oaks will be run on Saturday week at Eagle Farm with the $500,000 Queensland Derby on June 9.

“They're both coming off having run in a mile-and-a-half race in Adelaide at their last start,” Smerdon said.

“They will have this hit-out and then both will be off to their Queensland assignments.”

The late-maturing pair both had their campaigns extended after impressive performances over 2500m at Morphettville.

Westsouthwest was third to Zabeelionaire and Sabrage in the SA Derby on May 5 while Red Typhoon won the G3 SA Fillies Classic on May 12.

Westsouthwest's performance in Adelaide prompted Smerdon to keep the gelding in work for Brisbane.

"South Australia was the main aim, but he went terrific there so we thought we'd continue on to Queensland,” he said.

"He's come through that race well. This is just to get a few race day miles into his legs on Saturday and then we'll head up to Queensland."
