Aidan O’Brien ‘thinking of Irish St Leger’ for Kyprios return

Aidan O’Brien has pencilled in the Irish St Leger for star-stayer Kyrpios’ return to action having missed the first half of the season due to an inner infection inside a joint picked up in February.

The son of Galileo won all six of his outings in 2022 in a campaign that saw his rating rise from 100 to 124 and pick up a remarkable four-straight Group 1 victories along the way.

Kyprios began his ascendency to the top of the staying division with a comfortable win in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan back in April before following that up with an emphatic four-length success in the Group 3 Levmoss Stakes at Leopardstown.

Subsequently, a step up to the top level awaited and Aidan O'Brien's rising star proved he was capable of mixing it with the very best when battling on bravely to deny both 2021 Epsom Derby runner-up Mojo Star and champion stayer Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup. A trip to Goodwood was next on the cards and once again Kyprios was made to pull out all the stops by Stradivarius to land further Group 1 honours.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained runner then justified odds-on favouritism to claim the Irish St Leger Stakes at the Curragh, before producing one of the performances of the season by running out a staggering twenty-length winner of the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp when last seen.

Speaking with At The Races trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "He's in good shape. We're very happy with him and he's slowly started his build up and we're thinking of the Irish St Leger but I'm not sure if we'll get a run into him before."

"It's great to have him back in full work again and so far, so good with him."

The Irish St Leger will take place at the Curragh on September 10th.
