No Secret about Angel’s chance

Secret Angel can give Karl Burke another good two-year-old winner when she lines up in the British Stallion Studs EBF Spindrifter Conditions Stakes at Pontefract.

Burke's North Yorkshire yard has become something of a powerhouse when it comes to the juvenile division and this Dark Angel filly will not have to travel too far down the road from her box in Middleham.

She has been seen just once so far, when finishing a perfectly respectable third at Nottingham earlier this month.

At the rear on the stalls opening, she travelled with enthusiasm behind horses and moved handily into it, although all-the-way winner Miska was always just holding her.

She will almost certainly have learned plenty from that and if that is the case then she can be a major player.

Elegant Erin is in unstoppable form at the moment and there is every chance of that continuing in the Napoleons Casino Bradford Fillies' Handicap.

Paul Midgley's five-year-old has absolutely loved the return to sprint trips, and has notched up a hat-trick of wins, most recently over this course and distance.

She was forced to come widest of runners, but swept to the front with just the minimum of encouragement needed to win very cosily.

Life is going to get harder with a further 6lb to shoulder, but she cannot be deserted until her winning run comes to an end.

Carnival Zain is another who has shown a liking for the West Yorkshire circuit and can be backed in the 'Our Mums' Memorial Handicap.

Micky Hammond's charge was just foiled in his bid for a three-timer at the end of May, not really doing anything wrong as he had just mastered the long-time leader before the eventual winner came up his inside on the rail. Compensation awaits.

Commandment makes a quick reappearance in the 20th Wilfred Underwood Memorial Classified Stakes, and the hint should be taken.

Ed Dunlop's lightly-raced three-year-old was never far off the front rank at Newmarket the weekend before last, but just had to switch slightly and come wide to make her run.

Despite staying on strongly when meeting the rising ground, she was a short head adrift at the line.

It is a stretch to call Witch Hunter the most luckless horse in training but at the same time he does deserve more than a solitary win to his name.

To that end he has a chance for a second one in the Fitzdares Sprint Series Handicap at Windsor.

In three starts last year he was not beaten more than three-quarters of a length and after getting off the mark at odds on at Wolverhampton in February, he then had the misfortune to bump into the prolific El Caballo at Lingfield.

Given a break since that effort, he should run his race once more.

Splendent is interesting as he returns to action in the Buy Fitz Perfectly At oldgoldracing.com Handicap.

Trained by Paul and Oliver Cole, he clashed with Coroebus on his racecourse bow last year, finishing a creditable third while the two who finished directly behind when he got off the mark at Newcastle in November are both subsequent winners.

He is up against race-fit rivals here, but his starting mark of 83 could prove useful.
