Forgotten horse Berkshire is set for an imminent return to competitive action.

Having won the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Royal Lodge at Newmarket as a two-year-old for trainer Paul Cole, connections headed into the winter with Classic aspirations.

However, that dream was short-lived as he finished tailed off on his reappearance in the Greenham Stakes, after which he had to undergo a colic operation to remove an enterolith - described by connections as "a build-up of materials which was as big as a grapefruit".

The Mount Nelson colt has slowly been nursed back to full health and the trainer's son and assistant, Oliver Cole, is excited about getting him back on the racecourse in the coming weeks.

Cole said: "Berkshire worked last Friday at Kempton under Jim Crowley and worked very well. We were really pleased with him.

"He'll probably work again on Thursday morning, go back to Kempton on Friday and then he'll be hitting the races.

"There is a Listed race over a mile and a quarter at Lingfield (Churchill Stakes, November 15) and there is a race over a mile at Newmarket.

"We are taking our time with him, letting him tell us rather than us telling him when he should be running, but he looks to be coming back to his best.

"He seems to be getting better with each piece of work and hopefully he'll be back on the track in tip-top form before too long."
