Fresh Blow For Barzalona

Snow Sky, who was a general 20-1 for Saturday's Investec Derby, will not line up at Epsom, but his jockey James Doyle will bid for Classic glory after being booked to ride Godolphin's Pinzolo.

The news is a further blow to Mickael Barzalona, who has seen his opportunities to ride for Pinzolo's trainer Charlie Appleby reduced recently.

Doyle, who would have partnered Lingfield Derby Trial winner Snow Sky for his boss Khalid Abdullah had the three-year-old recovered from a knocked a joint, now comes in for the mount on the 50-1 outsider, one of 16 colts declared for Saturday.

Ante-post Derby favourite Australia, described by Aidan O'Brien as the best he has trained, will break from stall 12 on Saturday with stablemates Geoffrey Chaucer, Orchestra and Kingfisher in seven, 14 and 16. Second favourite Kingston Hill is drawn two.

True Story, Godolphin's Saeed Bin Suroor-trained contender, is in stall one, a berth no horse has won from at Epsom over 1m4f in fields of ten or more since Oath won the Derby in 1999.

Pinzolo will race from stall four and while Doyle rides, Appleby insisted Barzalona, who memorably won the Derby on Pour Moi three years ago, still has a part to play for him.

"Mickael was in again this morning and he is part of the team," Appleby said on Thursday. "He knows what he has to do, to keep his head down and keep knocking the winners in and he is going to still be riding for us.

"On days like Saturday I will use whoever I feel is suitable for the horse and that I hope will get the best result for the team."

As for Doyle, Appleby said: "He is a jockey who is riding at the top of his game at the moment."

Like Pinzolo, Appleby's other runner Sudden Wonder - the mount of Kevin Manning - is an outsider.

"I've been delighted with their preparation," said the trainer. "We've been on a bit of a weather watch regarding Pinzolo, but they've had a bit of rain.

"He's won on soft ground at Newbury, but it wasn't that bad that day. He's fit and well and there's only one Derby so we'll take our chance."

Appleby, having his first runners in the world's most famous Flat race, added: "The form of Pinzolo's win in the Fairway Stakes is working out nicely - the second [Master Carpenter] came out and won well at Sandown - he's in great nick and he'll appreciate stepping up in trip. To have two runners in the race is exciting."
