UK: Blaze turns up heat at Newmarket

Mahmood Al Zarooni continued his flying start to the new campaign with his first two-year-old winner in the NGK Spark Plugs E.B.F. Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket.

Godolphin's trainer struck with his opening British runner of the season on Wednesday and there seemed to be good vibes about the attractive grey Fire Blaze, who went off the 11-2 favourite.

She knew her job well enough, responding to jockey Mickael Barzalona to beat Blhadawa and Twist And Shout by two necks.

"It's great to have a two-year-old winner at the Craven meeting," said Al Zarooni.

"There aren't any plans, but we'll find her a Listed or conditions race now."

Ajraam came out on top of a large field of unraced three-year-olds in the Swan At Lavenham Wood Ditton Stakes.

Already gelded and one of a quartet of runners for the watching Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Ajraam was notably ridden by Ryan Moore for Charlie Hills.

Always prominent, the 16-1 shot was challenged by Al Zarooni's 3-1 favourite Bustopher but seemed to find extra and eventually won by three-quarters of a length.

"We had to have him cut and he was quite immature, so we didn't run him last year," said Hills.

"It's quite quick and he seemed to handle it well. He'll probably stay at a mile and we'll see what mark he gets, and go from there."
