Benevento gave trainer Raphael Freire the biggest win of his burgeoning career when taking the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster on Friday.

The son of Wootton Bassett was only a 7/1 shot for the seven-furlong contest, having suffered a two length defeat at the hands of Soldier's Heart in the Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy in late August. Yet jockey David Egan was always positive on the juvenile, leading the centre group with a furlong to run and keeping on well to land the honours by half-a-length. The well-fancied Godolphin colt Symbol Of Honour finished second, with Hugo Palmer's The Waco Kid back in third. 

In an interview with ITV Racing, winning jockey David Egan said: "I think the team have done a fantastic job with this horse. He obviously won early in the year but the team took their team with him, it's been a work in progress, they didn't rush him and it's worked wonders with him.

"He ran a nice race last time in Ripon, would have learnt a lot on the undulations but I thought six furlongs was a touch on the sharp side for him. He liked the step up in trip and appreciated the little bit of ease in the ground as well.

"He's obviously stepped up on every start from five (furlongs), to six, to seven. He showed a nice turn of foot to get the job done."

Benevento holds an entry for the Group 1 Futurity Trophy Stakes back at Doncaster in late October, and was shortened from 66/1 to 20/1 with Paddy Power for the mile contest.
