He may only have broken his maiden status two starts ago, but do not be fooled by the aptly-named Deception in this Saturday’s Group 3 Singapore Three-Year-Old Sprint (1200m).

The I Am Invincible gelding finally got onto the winner's circle at his seventh start but it was not through lack of trying, given trainer Donna Logan had saddled him six times prior for six placings.

Two of those placings - one in Novice company - were behind the Michael Clements-trained Alqantur (who probably starts as one of the fancies in the feature race worth $110,000) and both those efforts, and his maiden win, were all on the turf.

Add excuses at his latest run on the Polytrack (Class 4 race over 1100m on June 4) - where traffic in the straight was very costly - and Deception  may very well be the best-named horse in Singapore come Saturday late afternoon.

Does his trainer agree?

"He's flying under the radar, that's for sure," said Logan from the barrier trials on Tuesday.

"And I like it that way.

"He did take a long time to break his maiden but he was still learning his trade and progressed with every run.

"He probably could have won last start with an ounce of luck and while he is up against the top three-year-olds here, (apprentice jockey) Hakim (Kamaruddin) knows him well.

"He is working nicely too and I think he'll run a good race for (Fortuna Stable manager) Chris (Galvin), who will be here on Saturday."

The Fortuna Stable has as many as six runners nominated for Saturday and with Galvin bringing fellow owners and guests from New Zealand and Australia to Kranji, expect a big roar and an even bigger owners' photo if any manages to win.

"Chris told me it's the most (number of) runners he's ever had on one race day, which is very exiting for us," continued Logan.

"Apart from Deception, Fortuna have King Arthur and Hadeer in the ($85,000) Class 2 (race over 1200m), Entertainer and Brutus in the ($70,000) Class 3 (race over 1100m) and Elliot Ness looks well placed in ($30,000) Class 5 (race over 1200m) and we expect them all to be very competitive."

And what of Logan's other runner – Montana Flash – in the 3YO Sprint?

"Look, it's a big ask given he has only had one run in Singapore but he brought some good form from Australia," explained Logan, who sits only five winners behind Tim Fitzsimons in the 2022 trainers' premiership race.

"He also had excuses not to finish closer in that same Poly(track) race as Deception. We are also lucky to have (jockey) Danny Beasley booked for Saturday.

"He will be better on the turf and if he shows some of the form from Australia – he ran fourth (to Zethus) in a Group (3) race (Canonbury Stakes on January 30, 2021) you know – I think he could surprise a few.

"These three-year-old races aren't on every day, so why not race him against his own age as we know he can gallop."

In an ironic twist, the horse Logan thinks is hardest to beat is Silent Gold, who was recently transferred from the New Zealander's stable to trainer Stephen Gray after back-to-back-wins.

"He (Silent Gold) is probably the horse to beat but Montana (Flash) has fresh legs and Deception doesn't do much wrong and he will be better over longer, so nothing is a 'dead cert'," stated the Kiwi conditioner.

Logan has another seven runners nominated for Saturday and of those, she thinks Flashfast should run well in the $75,000 Novice race over 1400m.

"He's back in trip but I think that will be OK," mused Logan, the only female trainer in Singapore.

"(Jockey) Jake (Bayliss) will ride as he can be a bit tricky and needs to be bossed, but the field doesn't look overly strong and he should be very competitive."

Apart from managing the 14 horses nominated for Saturday, Logan was also busy running her eyes over a few newcomers at the trials on Tuesday with a two-year-old in Luxury Brand beating his three-year-old stablemate, Rocky in heat no. 1.

"There were only three horses in that trial but I was happy with them both," remarked Logan.

"We will look at a race for them in the next week or so and Trident was impressive winning (heat no. 2) so he will line up next week."
