Talented mare Sensible Princess may go into next month’s Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) without a lead-up run.
And that’s not a scenario that trainer Fraser Auret is fazed about.
“We have got an option to get a run into her before Hastings. She’ll have another trial at Foxton on August 1 and then decide, but it wouldn’t worry me to run her first-up in the Tarzino.
“She came in early and the weather will influence what we do. She could go into Hastings fresh, she’s quite forward at this stage.”Auret, who produced Aide Memoire to finish a close second in the race last year, has a history of winning Group One features with fresh runners with the now-retired Julinsky Prince claiming the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) off a five-month break.
Sensible Princess has won six of her 10 starts and hasn’t raced since she beat Francaletta and Coldplay in the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) at Pukekohe in the spring. The Street Sense mare also holds Hawke’s Bay nominations for the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) and the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m), as does stablemate Darscape Princess.
“Darscape Princess is looking great and I’m chuffed with the way she spelled,” Auret said. The Darci Brahma four-year-old has won five of her 13 starts and finished runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) before a break following an unplaced run in the Gr.1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m).
“That was probably one run too many for her,” Auret said. “She’s from quite a slow-maturing family and she won’t be seen out early. She’s nominated for the mile at Hastings, but it may come up a bit soon.“There are some lovely options for her like the Captain Cook Stakes. She absolutely hates wet ground so the weather may dictate things with her.”
