A decision is pending on the future of the multiple stakes winner La Fille En Jeu.

The Wanganui mare is still enjoying a break following her lucrative autumn campaign in the South Island.

“She is due to come back into work soon, but we’re thinking about whether she goes straight to stud or races on into the spring,” said trainer Nigel Auret, who bred and owns the six-year-old with his wife Adaire.

“We’ve still got a bit of time to decide on that, but she will be mated either way in the spring.”

She will be served by the Gr.1 Hollywood Turf Cup (2400m) and Listed Werribee Cup (2600m) winner Unusual Suspect, who stands at the Auret’s Letham Stud.

La Fille En Jeu won the Gr.3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton in March and subsequently added the Listed Easter Cup (1600m) to her record. She returned home after finishing fourth in the Listed Great Easter Stakes (1400m).

By the late Mettre En Jeu, who formerly stood at Letham, La Fille En Jeu’s younger sister Petite En Jeu will be in action at Hastings on Saturday in the Animal Health Direct Handicap (1400m).

“It’s been pretty frustrating the way things have panned out with her,” Auret said. “She has had a lot of foot trouble and other niggly things.”

Despite her issues, Petite En Jeu has the tidy record of five wins from 18 starts and she resumed from a four month break with a bold showing in the Listed Ag Challenge Stakes (1590m) at Wanganui earlier this month.

She made the running before tiring late to finish seventh behind Tomelilla.

“She had missed a gallop leading up to that race and it cost us in the end, she came to the end of it in the last 100m,” Auret said.
