A week away at Karioitahi beach proved the key to unlock the best from top sprinter Galaxy Miss who powered away with the last race at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Trainer Danica Guy had been concerned that the six-year-old mare appeared disinterested in her last few starts which had resulted in some sub-par efforts. Guy took the decision to send the mare to the beach environment for a week and she returned refreshed and raring to go for Saturday’s rating 85 1400m contest.

“She just wasn’t putting in the effort like we know she can, so we decided to change a few things around,” said Guy.

“We sent her off to Karioitahi beach for a week and it really turned her attitude around. She came back with a spring in her step, so I thought she could go a good race on Saturday.”

Positioned outside the speed throughout by rider Jasmine Fawcett, Galaxy Miss dominated her rivals in the closing stages to record her seventh career victory and 4th at Te Rapa.

“Jasmine rode her perfectly to instructions and she did the job nicely,” said Guy.

“Some moisture on the day helped her although they still ran good time so the track obviously wasn’t that badly affected.”

Guy is now keen to see the Tavistock mare add some black type to her record with the Gr.3 ISCL Rotorua Stakes (1400m) at Rotorua in a fortnight her immediate target.

“This could potentially be her last season racing so she deserves to get some black type to her name before she heads to the matron’s paddock,” she said.

“The race at Rotorua looks a natural fit for her so, as long as she can get out of the barrier like she did on Saturday, she would have to be pretty competitive.

“Safely through that we will look at some more open handicaps over the winter and then her owners will decide on what they want to do with her after that.”
