Australian speed merchant Il Cavallo will have race track business to take care of before he begins stage two of his career at Chequers Stud next year.

Brothers Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Campin have purchased the well-related stallion and are keen to chase black type honours in New Zealand to further boost the five-year-old’s profile before he retires to their Cambridge farm for the 2016 breeding season.

“He’ll arrive next Thursday and he will have a few days off and then we’ll get him started on the treadmill here on the farm for a couple of weeks,” Mark Fraser-Campin said.

“He should be very competitive here and we’ll be looking at the Railway with him. We would probably give him a trial somewhere and then maybe run in the Counties Bowl first.

“We would be proud to stand him at stud even if he doesn’t race - he’s an outstanding type of horse with a great pedigree and a terrific temperament so he ticks all the boxes for us,” Fraser-Campin said.

Under the guidance of top Caulfield trainer Peter Moody, Il Cavallo has won four times at 1000 metres and once in track record time at Sandown over 900 metres from his 16 starts. He also placed in the Gr.3 Vain Stakes and the Listed Carlyon Stakes.

Chequers Stud was alerted to the stallion prospects of Il Cavallo, who will stand alongside Battle Paint next term, by Melbourne-based agent Tony Cavanagh, who enjoyed an association with the late Jim Campin.

“He and Dad were mates and Tony rung us about the horse,” Fraser-Campin said. “He sponsored the Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings years ago when Dad won it with Phillipa Rush.”

Il Cavallo is a son of Choisir and the El Moxie mare Gold Chant and he is a half-bother to the Gr.1 1000 Guineas winner Amicus and a three-quarter brother to the former champion European and Australian sprinter and Group One-producer Starspangledbanner.

It is also the female family of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Gr.1 Secretariat Stakes winner Highland Reel, who is currently on the third line of betting for the Gr.1 Cox Plate.
