Rio Claro on trial for Ryder Stakes

A start in next month's Listed Ryder Stakes will be the reward for Te Awamutu two-year-old Rio Claro if he can break through at Matamata on Wednesday.

Trainer Robert Priscott has a high opinion of the Captain Rio gelding, who has finished second at Te Awamutu and Ellerslie in his last two starts.

"On his form from those two runs, he should win, but his form left-handed has been disappointing, so that's the question mark," Priscott said.

"We wanted to give him a try left-handed again at Matamata because we're thinking about the Ryder Stakes if he went well."

Though he was unplaced in his first two starts left-handed, Rio Clara's form has been made to look all the stronger after Get That Jive, the horse he ran second to at Te Awamutu, went on to beat all but Secret Spirit in the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie.

"He's a neat horse and he's grown well through the season, so he should go on and make a nice three-year-old too," Priscott said.

Danielle Johnson picks up the ride on Rio Claro in the Sacred Falls at Waikato Stud 2yo (1200m).

Per Incanto debutante Bigsie, a trial winner for the powerful Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable, looks the main danger for rider Matt Cameron.
