Werther thriving ahead of second Derby tilt

Werther will continue his Australian travels on Friday when he flies to Brisbane to prepare for the $A600,000 Gr.1 Queensland Derby at Doomben on June 6.

He is currently in Melbourne following his brave second behind the star filly Delicacy in the Gr.1 South Australian Derby.

“He’s been in the paddock since his last run and he’s doing really well,” trainer Andrew Campbell said. “We weren’t going to go to Brisbane, but thought why not have a crack when he’s in such good form.”

Campbell said a rider for Werther in the Queensland Derby had yet to be confirmed.

Debut winner possible stakes contender

Get That Jive could make an early entry into black type company following his debut win at Te Awamutu on Wednesday.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Street Sense colt, who carries the colours of his Gr.1 NZ 2000 Guineas-winning stablemate Turn Me Loose, is a possible Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes contender on Saturday week.

“He’s improving with everything he does and it’s an option,” Forsman said. “He had trialled up really well here and then we gave him a quiet trial in amongst horses at Te Teko.”

Winning rider Matt Cameron said Get That Jive wasn’t a natural two-year-old, but his class was apparent.

Maiden winner shows true worth

Stephen Marsh may not have the services of his runaway maiden winner He’s Game for much longer.

The Cambridge trainer produced the Keeper gelding for a seven length victory on Wednesday at his second race day appearance.

“He travelled like a winner in his first-up run and then did a few things wrong,” Marsh said.

“That’s more like it and he’s a horse going places. I thought he would have been sold by now, maybe he will be after today.”
