Mungo Jerry produced a Lazarus-type comeback to outstay his opposition over the ultimate flat distance in Saturday’s Gr.3 New Zealand Cup at Riccarton.
The Hunterville stayer was literally on his death bed a year ago, but expert veterinary care and a shrewd training regime resulted in a case of third time lucky in the Christchurch Casino-sponsored 3200 metre feature.
Fourth in the cup three years ago and unplaced last year, Mungo Jerry only had his first runs over ground this preparation earlier in the month when third at Awapuni and he filled a similar placing in the Listed Metropolitan Trophy on the opening day of the carnival.
Despite a solid form line, he went out at odds of 20-1 and courtesy of a new plan of attack he was too tough for his rivals.“We had a plan – he’s got a great sprint, but he doesn’t always finish it off – so we decided to ride him for luck and give him every chance,” rider Kelly Myers said.
She had Mungo Jerry toward the back off the field on the fence and rails runs continued to present themselves 1200 metres from home.Myers and Mungo Jerry cut the corner into the straight and they drew clear in the closing 100 metres to take the honours by a length and a-quarter.
“I’m thrilled for Adrian and Harry Bull – they have been good family friends and you wouldn’t find nicer people,” Myers said.Esprit D’Or fought on gallantly for second after forcing the issue with Blizzard, who took fourth, a long way from home and the Metropolitan winner She’s Insatiable found the line well for third.
