Statistic Of The Week of French Racing News - 2nd September 2021.
The Prix du Moulin is a Group One thoroughbred race for horses aged three years or older, over 1600m at Longchamp. First run in 1957, the event has been staged at the Parisienne venue since 1987. Since 1980, the event has been raced on the first Sunday in September with a view to realigning the European mile division and avoid a clash between the Group One contests of the Sussex Stakes, Prix Jacques le Marois and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (all over 1600m).
In the previous ten seasons a trend has emerged. Six winners have proven themselves at the top level, with a victory in a Group One over 1600m prior to winning this contest. Moonlight Cloud, Charm Spirit, Ervedya, Ribchester, Circus Maximus and Persian King all met this criteria.
The emerging star this season is Baaeed (Sea The Stars) and the colt will be well-supported for the Prix du Moulin. William Haggas trains the three-year-old who is undefeated from four starts including an easy victory in the G3 Thoroughbred Stakes (1600m) at Goodwood in July. He remains an exciting and talented performer and fills the 'could be anything' bracket but is yet to be tested at the highest level. He would need to buck the trend above to succeed in this event.
Five of the contenders for this season's renewal have won a Group One over 1600m: Victor Ludorum, Order Of Australia, Poetic Flare and both fillies in the line-up, Snow Lantern and Coeursamba. They will certainly give Baaeed his toughest assignment to date.
