Bred to be a superstar, Federer has kept his record intact with an impressive victory at start number two at Sandown

A Ballarat maiden winner on debut earlier in the month, Federer stamped his authority on the IVE> Handicap (1600m) on Wednesday, racing to a six-length victory.

Sent out the $1.65 favourite under Ben Allen, Federer was in cruise control throughout in defeating Heavenly Eagle ($13) with Fayetta ($7) a nose away third.

Federer is a son of multiple Group 1 winner Dundeel from Caulfield Cup winning mare Jameka and is prepared by Ciaron Maher

Jack Turnbull, Maher's assistant trainer, said there was a lot to like about Federer who had been given a delayed start to his career due to some minor soreness issues as a younger horse.

"He was a long, slow build-up with the issues he had," Turnbull said.

"He was sore behind and had a foot problem, so it was patience from the owners, but they will be rewarded. He's bred to be a star, and he hasn't done much wrong to date.

"We'll have a chat to Ciaron, but I would naturally think there would be a step up in trip, if that is what we need, and I would say we will tackle stronger events in the future."

Turnbull described Federer's six-length romp as impressive, adding the most pleasing aspect was the way the gelding relaxed early in the contest.

"He went back, he relaxed and travelled very strong into it and was kept on the bridle from a long way out and was very strong through the line and very collected," Turnbull said.

"It was as good as you could see in this grade stepping up. The trip was a big plus, and it was what you want to see.

"He's got good speed, and if he stays, that will be the biggest thing for him.

"He's four now, he'll get stronger, and it will all be about his race day manners now going forward."
