Third Time The Charm For Matilda

Mark’s Matilda appears poised to strike third run from a spell in the final event at Seymour on Thursday.

The Nigel Blackiston-trained mare has performed well in both runs this campaign with her latest showing at Caulfield behind Danestroem particularly strong.

After a slow getaway she stuck to her task well for a 2.3 length fifth with the effort yielding a Timeform figure of 84.

Based on that effort Mark’s Matilda should take a power of beating at Seymour on Thursday in the Mangalore Park Ratings 64 Handicap (1300m).

Mark’s Matilda sits well clear of this field on both 12 month and 50 day weight adjusted Timeform figures.

Running around the same mark of her last start performance would likely see Mark’s Matilda record an overdue win however being just third run from a spell, there is enough to suggest she can improve further.

The Domesday mare has drawn beautifully in barrier five and has shown her tractability in terms of where she can settle during six career outings.

It gives talented apprentice Oisin Murphy options but is largely expected to settle the mare midfield.

She will notice a sharp class drop from a Caulfield Benchmark 90 last start during the final event at Seymour.

If not earlier on, it will be midway up the straight as she looms up on the early leaders before claiming the Mangalore Park Ratings 64 Handicap (1300m).

There are a few dangers in the contest and based on his first up outing at Geelong, Eye The World is one of them.

The David Hayes-trained gelding fought on well first up and will no doubt take benefit from the outing.

Eye The World has drawn favourably and still has plenty of room for improvement before reaching his current master Timeform rating.

Roshaca was disappointing last start however is capable of better as evidenced by his first up display at Wangaratta.

The Lee and Shannon Hope-trained gelding reportedly didn’t handle the wet track at Caulfield last start but will get firmer footing at Seymour on Thursday.

Roshaca’s master Timeform rating of 81 was yielded at the track during his maiden campaign when trying to make all.

Expect the Hold That Tiger gelding to be prominent throughout.

Our Swagman after kicking off his latest campaign with two minor placings is another worth keeping in mind as an each way player.

Overall though, having gained a run as first emergency, expect Mark’s Matilda to capitalise in the Mangalore Park Ratings 64 Handicap (1300m) at Seymour on Thursday.
