Race three at Murwillumbah today, the Rainbow Fruits C3 Handicap (1530m), is a good competitive affair but none look to have the promise of the lightly raced three-year-old, Congo.
Trained by Matthew Dunn, Congo, comes into today’s race second up after making light work of a small field here last time when resuming over 1200m.
He goes straight to 1530m now but that is not seen as an issue with Congo having gone from 1200m to 1600m successfully last campaign.
There he stepped out in Saturday metropolitan company at Doomben and after travelling up sweetly into the turn he put his rivals away, winning by 2.5 lengths with something in hand.
That form rates well clear of anything put up by his rivals leading into today’s race.
Coming off such a pleasing return here last time he looks on track to put up a piece of form at least close to that Doomben peak, and if able to do so he will prove too good despite giving weight all around in this competitive line up.
Fellow three-year-old Hussonette shapes as his main danger today.
The John Thompson trained filly was without luck when third at course and distance last start and like Congo she appears capable of measuring up to better races than this.
She showed a nice turn of foot winning two back at the Sunshine Coast and her form rates to be giving this a good shake.
Just So Bruno and Valiant Heart both have a bit to find on form against that pair but they are both last start winners and expected to race well here.
Just So Bruno is one that must go into multiples with his last start win at course and distance a good reward for consistent and honest form this campaign.
He should be right around the mark again here and if Congo and Hussonette falter he looks best placed to swoop in and steal the prize.
Others to be considered are Lightning Vault, who like Just So Bruno continues to race consistently well, and Shocking Blue, who appreciated coming back in grade last time and that piece of form rates to measure up okay in this.
