Capital In Command At Canberra

The appropriately named Capital Commander can dominate today's Urban Contractors Burley Griffin Sprint (race 6) in Canberra today.

The open class handicap over 1200m should be well within the grasp of the locally trained sprinter who was a last start winner in richer grade on the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day.

The mare, prepared by Nick Olive on the course, is racing in sparkling form this campaign and looks well placed here despite the big weight and awkward gate.

Fresh up this campaign the mare carried 61kg to win fresh up here over 1200m in a Benchmark 65, sitting third but proving too strong to score by 1.5 lengths.

She was then stepped up to 1400m in the rich Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai, where she again sat just off the pace and loomed up to win but couldn't quite match Viva Las, finishing a length second.

Two starts ago, Olive sent the mare to town over 1300m at Warwick Farm and with 57kg took up the running from a good gate and fought on strongly to score a neck win over Rose Of Peace.

Last start, heading to the Gold Coast for the $200,000 Fillies and Mares Quality on Magic Millions day, she drew the inside and sat just off the speed before looming up and drawing clear to score by a length over Arms Length.

Olive gave the mare a short let up since then run and she will be suited back at 1200m fresh.

The class certainly suits and she does have an excellent record when fresh.

Capital Commander has won four of five runs on her home course including two form two at the track and distance.

Brendan Ward, who has ridden her in plenty of her eight career wins, is back aboard today and from barrier eight should be camped just off the speed.

If she can run up to the form in Queensland she looks the clear top pick again today.

Another local galloper Vilakazi Street is going well and looks the main rival.

The gelding resumed over 1200m in a Benchmark 70 at Wagga and after getting well back had little luck when a three quarter length runner up behind High Expectation.

He then raced over 1200m in a Benchmark 75 at Moruya and after a slow start and getting well back to the tail he motored home to score a narrow but decisive win.

Last start, heading to town for a Benchmark 80 over 100m at Rosehill, he again hit the line well, coming from midfield to finish a neck second behind Magic Weekend.

He returns home today and drops in weight as he steps up to open class but with the light weight and on his strong record at home will be hard to hold out.

The Danny Williams trained How Much My Love is resuming in the race and although he's been well held in recent effort he looks well placed here fresh.

The gelding won the Wagga Town Plate four back, certainly a tough assignment than this, before finishing ninth form a wide gate over 1350m at Doomben after getting back to near last in the big field.

He then ran 10th in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes when beaten only a few lengths behind Adnocon before finishing last in the Listed Tatts Mile at Eagle Farm.

He bled in that race and was banned for the usual three months but resumes here on the back on a Goulburn trial win.

The gelding has a good record fresh and is yet to miss the placings in three runs here.

Ravna Gora has little luck in the Sapphire Coast Town Plate last start when a close up fifth and on his previous run, a win here with 59kg, he is certainly in the mix.

Moorings Capital has raced in town in three runs this campaign, the latest when runner up over 1450m at Warwick Farm.

After a freshen up and drop back to this company she looks a strong on pace chance with the light weight and good draw.
