The classy first-up wins by Sepoy in the Vain Stakes at Caulfield and Foxwedge in the San Domenico at Rosehill last weekend underline the quality breeding of first season sire Rothesay.
Rothesay, standing his first season in Queensland at Glenlogan Park stud, was the winner four of his nine starts in Sydney and Brisbane before an early retirement.
He wins included the G3 Lord Mayor's Cup at Doomben and the G2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm.
Rothesay is by the Foxwedge's outstanding Danehill sire Fastnet Rock and is nearly a three-quarter brother to Sepoy's dam Watchful.Watchful is a sister by Danehill to Camarena, winner of the Queensland Guineas and Queensland Derby and placed in the LKS Mackinnon Stakes, Invitation Stakes and Flight Stakes.
Both are from Canny Miss, a three-quarter sister to Canny Lass, the outstanding Bletchingly filly who went to the influential Mr. Prospector sire Woodman to produce Schiaparelli, the dam of Rothesay.
Canny Lass is a sister to Canny Lad, winner of the Golden Slipper and VRC Sires' Produce Stakes, runner up in the Blue Diamond Stakes and third in the Cox Plate.
At stud Canny lad is the sire of over 660 winners of 1890 races and $45.2 million.
Sepoy's sire Elusive Quality is a son of the Mr. Prospector sire Gone West and a mare by a Northern Dancer sire.
Elusive Quality did not succeed above Group 3 level in nine wins, but he set a world record time of 1:31.63 for a mile at New York's Belmont Park and a track record for seven furlongs at Florida's Gulfstream Park.
He has supplied 156 winners, including ten successful in stakes, and earners of $14.5 million from his use in Australia. His two G1 winners are the three-quarter relations Sepoy and Camarilla, a filly he got from Camarena.
Sepoy's dam Watchful was sold to Emirates Park Stud carrying a colt by Dubai Destination for only $55,000 at the 2009 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale.
As Dubai Destination is by a Mr. Prospector sire, that foal is nearly a three-quarter brother to Sepoy.
