Irish-bred Zoffarelli wins La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar
Coolmore Stud’s late sire Zoffany (Dansili) sired his 45th stakes winner on Sunday when his Irish-bred son Zoffarelli (3 g ex Genuine Quality by Elusive Quality) won the La Jolla Handicap (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Del Mar.
Formerly trained in England by Ralph Beckett, Zoffarelli was settled down in second last where he remained until the home turn. Making his run between runners, Zoffarelli got up in the shadow of the post to score by a head from Hudson Ridge (American Pharoah).
Zoffany was euthanised in January this year due to liver failure. His stakes winners include four Group One winners in Mother Earth, Ventura Storm, Albigna and Thunder Moon.
