21st Grade 1 winner for Speightstown
WinStar Farm-based stallion Speightstown (Gone West) sired his 21st Grade 1 winner on Saturday when the John Sadler-trained Flagstaff (7 g ex Indyan Giving by A.P. Indy) broke through at the top-level for the first time when he led home a quinella for the stallion in the Churchill Downs Stakes (Gr 1, 7f). The seven-year-old gelding came into the race off the back of a victory in the Commonwealth Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Keeneland on April 3 and he defeated  Lexitonian by a head. Speightstown is the sire of 122 stakes winners in total and he stood the 2021 season for a fee of US$90,000. 

 

19 for Temple City
Spendthrift Farm-based sire Temple City (Dynaformer) was represented by his 18th stakes winner on Saturday when his son Du Jour (3 c ex Guiltless by Bernardini) landed the American Turf Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Churchill Downs. Trained by Bob Baffert, the three-year-old colt was purchased by VC Corp for US$19,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and he was then bought by Donato Lanni for US$280,000 at last year’s Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Spring Two-Year-Old Sale. Temple City’s stakes winners are headed by Grade 1-winning tro Miss Temple City, Annals Of Time and Bolo.  

 

Fourth Grade 1 for Gamine
The Bob Baffert-trained four-year-old mare Gamine (4 m Into Mischief - Peggy Jane by Kafwain) added a fourth Grade 1 to her record when she landed the Derby City Distaff Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The four-year-old’s only defeat of her seven start career came when she finished third in the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) last year, but was subsequently disqualified from the race after testing positive for betamethasone, an anti-inflammatory medication. The mare was purchased by Grand Oaks for US$220,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and she was then subsequently bought by Michael Lund Petersen for US$1.8 million at the 2019 Fasig Tipton Midlantic Spring Two-Year-Old Sale. Gamine is one of nine top-flight winners for Spendthrift Stud’s Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday). 

 

86th Group / Grade winner for Dansili
Juddmonte Farms sire Dansili (Danehill) was handed his 86th stakes winner on Saturday as Blowout (5 m ex Beauty Parlour by Deep Impact) took out the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Churchill Downs. A winner of the Pebbles Stakes (Listed, 8f) in 2019, the four-year-old mare was close to winning her first Graded contest when she took out the Matriarch Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) on her final start as a four-year-old in November. Dansili’s stakes winners are headed by 22 top-flight winners. Dansili was pensioned in 2018. 

 

Colonel Liam and Domestic Spending head-heat
Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (Gr 1, 9,5f) Colonel Liam (4 c Liam's Map - Amazement by Bernardini) and fellow Grade 1 winner Domestic Spending (4 g Kingman - Urban Castle by Street Cry) shared the spoils when they dead-heated in the Turf Classic Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Colonel Liam is one of three Grade 1 winners for Lane’s End-based sire Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song), while British-bred Domestic Spending, whose first Grade 1 win came in the Hollywood Derby (Gr 1, 9f) last year, is among three top-flight winners for Juddmonte Farms’ stallion Kingman (Invincible Spirit). 

 

Fourth stakes win for Jackie's Warrior
The Steven Asmussen-trained Jackie's Warrior (3 c Maclean's Music - Unicorn Girl, by A.P. Five Hundred) added a fourth stakes win to his record when he landed the Pat Day Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The three-year-old colt - who won the Belmont Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) as juvenile - beat Dream Shake (Twirling Candy) by a head, while Whiskey Double (Into Mischief) was another four and half lengths away in third. The three-year-old is one of three top-flight winners and 21 stakes winners for Hill ‘N’ Dale-based stallion Maclean's Music (Distorted Humor). 

 

Magic Attitude bounces back
Last year’s Belmont Oaks (Gr 1, 10f) winner Magic Attitude (4 m Galileo - Margot Did by Exceed And Excel) recorded her first victory since her win in the Grade 1 when she landed the Sheepshead Bay Stakes (Gr 2, 11f) at Belmont Park on Saturday. The four-year-old daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) is out of Group 1-winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) Margot Did, making her a half-sister to Group 2 winner Mission Impossible. Magic Attitude is one of 89 elite level winners and 333 stakes scorers for Coolmore’s perennial sire Galileo.
 

26th Graded winner for Quality Road
In winning the Westchester Stakes (Gr 3, 8f), the Todd Pletcher-trained Dr Post (4 c ex Mary Delaney by Hennessy) became Graded stakes winner number 26 for Lane’s End-based stallion Quality Road (Elusive Quality). The colt was making his four-year-old debut having not been seen since his fourth place finish in the Jim Dandy Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Saratoga last September. Quality Road’s progeny is headed by 11 elite level winners, including multiple Grade 1-winning champion mare Abel Tasman.
