Greatest Honour (3 c ex Tiffany’s Honour by Street Cry) defied odds of 40-1 to win Saturday’s Holy Bull Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream Park, putting himself into the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 9f) picture. Trained by Shug McGaughey, who won the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb (Malibu Moon), the colt scored an impressive five and three quarter length victory and in doing so became the 141st stakes winner for Gainesway Farm-based sire Tapit (Pulpit).

Coming from near last, Greatest Honour went wide around the home turn and took the lead. He then ran on in the straight to pull right away from his rivals. Tarantino (Pioneerof The Nile), who had led early, held on for second with Prime Factor (Quality Road) another three and three quarters of a length back in third.

"I think the further the better for him. His breeding says he wants to go long. His dam is a half-sister to Rags To Riches and Jazil and that says distance," McGaughey said.

Bred and raced by Courtlandt Farms, Greatest Honour is the only winner out of unplaced Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Tiffany’s Honor who was bought by Katsumi Yoshida for US$2.2 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. His second dam is Grade 2 winner Better Than Honour (Deputy Minister) who produced five winners headed by multiple Grade 1 winner and Champion 3YO Filly Rags To Riches (A P Indy) and her Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) winning half-brother Jazil (Rags To Riches).

Tapit has one lot catalogued for this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, a colt out of Grade 1 winning mare Greta G (Exchange Rate) who is catalogued as Lot 324 from the draft of Coolmore Stud.

Tapit’s 2021 fee is set at US$185,000.
