Domestic Spending lands Hollywood Derby
Juddmonte Farms-based sire Kingman (Invincible Spirit) chalked up his third top-flight winner on Saturday when the Chad Brown-trained Domestic Spending (3 g ex Urban Castle by Street Cry) landed the Hollywood Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at Del Mar.
The three-year-old gelding was last seen landing the Saratoga Derby (Listed, 9.5f) and he took the enormous step up in class in his stride when he came out on top of a close finish, beating Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) by a head, while Gufo (Declaration Of War) was a further neck away in third.
Purchased by his owner Klaravich Stables for 300,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2018 from the Highclere Stud draft, the gelding is the only out of Listed-winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Urban Castle.
Urban Castle herself is out of Group 3 scorer Cloud Castle (In The Wings), who also produced fellow Group 3 winner Queen’s Best (King’s Best) - the dam of multiple elite level-winning champion mare Queen’s Trust (Dansili).
Cloud Castle is also the dam of Listed winner Reverie Solitaire (Nashwan), who in turn produced Group 2 winner Royal Solitaire (Shamardal), while this is also the family of Group 3-winning pair Thundering Nights (Night Of Thunder) and Dabyah (Sepoy).
Domestic Spending joins Palace Pier and Persian King - who is a new addition to the roster at Haras d'Etreham for 2021 - as Kingman’s other top-flight scorers and he is represented in Australia this season by Calyx, who is currently covering his first book of mares at Coolmore’s Jerrys Plains base.
Meanwhile, Palace Pier’s dam Beach Frolic (Nayef) is catalogued for the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and she will be offered by Highclere Stud in foal to Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) as Lot 1731.
