Bernardini colt sells for $3,550,000 to Gary Young.
Records were broken during the second session of the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale in Timonium, Maryland on Tuesday with a colt by Darley's Bernardini (A P Indy) breaking the sale record when selling for US$3,440,000 to Gary Young as agent for Zedan Racing.
Offered as Lot 385
by Sequel Bloodstock as agent for the colt's breeders Chester and Mary Broman, the session topper is out of winning Medaglia d'Oro (El Prado) mare G Note who is herself a daughter of Grade 2 winner Seeking The Ante (Seeking The Gold). The colt had breezed in a time of 9.4 seconds during Tuesday's under tack show.
The price is a new record for a thoroughbred sold at public auction in Maryland, eclipsing the previous record that was set in 2019 when subsequent champion Gamine (Into Mischief) was sold for US$1,800,000. The price is also a record for the colt's sire, with it being the most expensive Bernardini sold at public auction.
"Anything can happen at Timonium, and it just did," said Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sales Director Paget Bennett, on the sale topper. "It just goes to show people can feel confident about bringing that type of horse to the marketplace here in Maryland.
"With the 9.4 work and the Bernardini and the New York-bred, (Hip 385) had all the ingredients for it to go to seven figures."
Over the course of two days, 391 horses sold for US$37,297,700, up 10.7 per cent from the previous record of US$33,692,000, set last year. The average was US$95,391, a slight increase over last year's then-record highwater mark of US$94,375. The median was US$47,000 good for second highest in sale history, just down from the record set last year of US$50,000. The RNA rate was 18.9 per cent, under 20 per cent for the third consecutive year.
"We had a lot of buyers from all over the world that came to the sale," added Bennett.
"We had supporters regionally and nationally who came to buy racehorses here. We are tickled to death with these results."
