RANDWICK April 4

Randwick A Grass; Heavy 9

17 Heats – A Grass 2 x 1200m (2 Open); 8 x 1045m (4 Open; 2  2YO; 1 Maiden); 7 x 736m (1 Open; 4 2YO; 1 3YO; 1 Maiden)

Polytrack – 4 Heats 2 x 1080m (2 Open); 2 x 780m (2 Open)

A big set fuelled by many runners making up for the impact the recent big wet would have had on their preparations.

PANTONARIO (Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott): Is this Not A Single Doubt youngster the best maiden filly in Sydney? Surely she is with Group placings behind the likes of Fireburn and Coolangatta backed up by her impressive trial form. This was her second trial win since she was placed in the G3 Widden Stakes in January and underlined her talent as she went up a gear at the 200m after sitting outside the leader to coast home by 1.68 lengths in the fastest of the seven 736m heats (43.80; 33.87).

PARIS DIOR (Peter & Paul Snowden): Exciting Pierro filly is on the boil for a big first-up performance after another classy win in her 1045m heat (64.34) to back up her trial win on March 18. She did it easily to post the fastest last 600m sectional in the eight heats over the distance (35.08), sitting wide off a leading pair before cruising past them under a big hold from James McDonald to score by almost three lengths with the rest of the field spread out over more than 15 lengths. Expect her to confirm the potential she displayed early in the season.

SATIN RIBBONS (Peter & Paul Snowden): This regular trial star was responsible for another fast win, speeding away with quickest 1045m heat (63.20; 36.08). She held a break of almost 10 lengths at one stage before her margin was cut to just over three lengths by the closing FASHCHANEL but it must be noted she posted negative splits as she flew the gates to run her first 445m in 27.12 (1.20 seconds faster than the next best split in the eight 1045m heats) before coming home in a slow 36.08 (a full second slower than the fastest last 600m sectional).

The Waterhouse/Bott team won three of the four juvenile heats over 736m with PANTONARIO, VINNIE'S SPIRIT (44.12; 34.10) and COMMAND APPROVED (44.03; 34.12). The latter pair were strong through the line in their heats after covering plenty of ground and appeal as the right types for the Brisbane carnival.

The speedy DUCHESS kept running to win a strong 736m heat in good time (43.83; 33.95) with most merit in the efforts of SNEAKY PAIGE and MAMARAGAN to fill the placings. FITUESE (7th) was given an easy time before warming up late to run through the line with intent.

No knock on the 1045m heat wins by last start Melbourne winner GLISTENING (63.86; 35.31) and the good mare QUEEN BELLISSIMO (64.76; 35.26) while the closing second of KIRWAN'S LANE in the heat won by LORD OLYMPUS (63.86; 35.53) was one of the eye catching performances of the session.

The most interesting winner of the session was the Peter Robl-trained CATARATAS, an unraced 6YO gelding by O'Reilly having his first ever career trial. Showed talent to cover ground and surge to the line for a soft win in his 736m heat (44.15; 34.28). Other maiden runners to make an impression included the easy third by TAVI L'AMOUR in her 1045m heat and a strong fourth by the unraced filly TOMISLAVA in the open 3YO heat won by the four time winner AUTHENTIC JEWEL (44.25; 34.38).

Classy pair HEUETOR (75.07; 35.53) and MAXIMAL (74.33; 35.68) won the two 1200m heats in warm ups for their Queensland campaigns. The efforts of CLIFF'S ART and PURPLE SECTOR to finish second in these heats had merit.
