The Mount Barker region is a mixed sheep, cattle and grain farming area and is renowned for its vineyards and premium wines. It is also the location of Mungrup Stud, the largest thoroughbred breeding stud in WA. The Grapes and Gallops Race Day is a big attraction at Mt Barker Turf Club till January celebrating the local wine and racing industries. The Mt Barker Cup is run in March. Mount Barker racecourse is a symmetrical oval with long horseshoe turns, 1600m in circumference with a home straight of 306 metres. Racing is conducted anti-clockwise over distances from 1000m to 2100m. Starting chutes provide for races over 1300m and 2100m. The 1300m start provides a straight run of 500 metres to the 800m turn.
