PROFILING THE RACE

o In 21 years, only 4 Slipper winners have done the back-up double but interestingly of the other 17, 8 placegetters at Rosehill have won the Sires - in fact only Viscount and Guelph contested the Slipper, failed to place and won the Sires.

o Normally a real favourites race although heavily backed Overreach couldn’t sustain.

Review: This was not the most conventional program for the Sires. Most runners come through the Slipper. But the Snowdens had done a great job with the Blue Diamond winner back and that was some win. He trialled and it wasn’t the most convincing.

But on the wet track perhaps he had a good prep anyway. He got back in the field but surged through late. Bowman reckoned he was gone at the furlong but ran away from them in the end.

2014 – PEGGY JEAN 2f (Myboycharlie x Lady Of Love) ($3.75)

Review: Gerald Ryan had had a great run with his 2yos in this season. So much so that he’d qualified two in the Kindergarten and four in this Sires plus his best one Rubick was in the paddock after the Blue Diamond.

The fillies had dominated the Slipper with the first seven home. They didn’t have quite the power in the Sires but still got the job done. Peggy Jean went back at the start on the heavy going. Rawiller held her together and she pushed through the field.

While second got up the inside, they came away but the filly did what was required.

2013 – GUELPH 2f (Exceed And Excel x Camarilla) ($9)

Review: If there was a slightly unlucky horse in the Slipper it was Guelph and while she wouldn’t have won, she could well have placed. This time she drew 13 and went a long way back.

The Slipper winner Overreach was well supported and led on her ear again. Up the rise she tried the same acceleration but it wasn’t there as Scandiva first challenged her and then Guelph ran over the top.

Exceed And Excel won the second leg of the siring Triple Crown which Darley loved as well. Fillies ran the trifecta for the first time since 1980.
