Gailo Chop wins 2017 Ubet Penny Edition Stakes Listed $100,000 at Morphettville Parks (SA), 1400m.
Class won through with Gailo Chop, the European import, setting the scene for a profitable spring after a nice win here. Racing well short of his preferred distance, he settled midfield (rails) from barrier two under rider John Allen, moved forward to be handier just prior to straightening, eased off the fence once into the straight, got clear running at the 200m then mowed them down to win going away, his ninth in 18 starts.
Lord Aspen took over the pace at the 1000m, led them into the straight, was challenged, fought back to lead again and fought hard to the line but was not able to hold out the winner.
Hermosa Beach sat outside the lead rounding the last corner, tried to get on terms and fought all the way to the line for a solid third from Riziz, who was in behind the pace turning in, switched to the fence and ran on best of the rest for fourth, trying hard to the line. The first four home were clear of the rest.
