Maygrove wins 2016 Jakkalberry Classic Listed NZ$50,000 at Arawa Park (NZ), 1950m.
Class won through when Maygrove, carrying top weight of 60kg, scored a good victory. He settled fourth last from barrier 11 with a round to go, three off the fence. Down the back at the 1000m, rider Michael Coleman urged the grey forward and with 600m to run closed in on the leading group, three wide. Before straightening their momentum saw them camped outside the leaders and into the home run they cruised into the clear out in the middle of the track. Coleman shook him up but they had the race in safe keeping inside the 150m although Gentil Tonton ate into the lead late.
Gentil Tonton sat midfield (rails) at the 1200m, was shuffled back around the bend then got off the fence before the last corner. Wide into the straight, he tried to tack onto the winner's back and finished on but could not bridge the winner's break.
Flyinby was pushed wide approaching the last corner and ran on best of the rest for a late third.
