Sweet And Speedy wins 2015 The Vanity Group 3 $150,000 at Flemington (VIC) 3yo Fillies, 1400m.
Sweet And Speedy is a progressive filly who stepped up in class to win well here. She settled back in second last place in the nine-horse field, following a moderate pace. She tracked up behind Set Square after turning for home, switched out at the 300m and sprinted too quickly to score a smart win by a long neck.
Set Square, having her first run since winning the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) in November, travelled nicely in seventh place. She moved up nicely nearing the home turn, took a little while to wind up in the straight but challenged strongly coming to the 100m, but was out-sprinted by the late closing winner for a very good (long neck) second.
The favourite Wawail worked a bit in the early stages to find the lead. She then steadied the pace, sprinted clear at the 400m but tired a bit in the closing stages for third, her first defeat in five starts.
Fenway raced in sixth place, was ridden patiently by Damien Oliver nearing the home turn and managed to angle through to be in a challenging position at 300m. She then fought on quite well for (1.4 lengths) fourth.
Maastricht was fourth, one out and one back. She put in a good run at the 300m, briefly looking a threat and then fought on to finish (2.4 lengths) fifth.
Clover Lane held on quite well for (2.6 lengths) sixth while Mossbeat caught the eye, after being midfield on the rails, was blocked in the straight before running on late for (2.7 lengths) seventh.
