General Truce ($16) eased across from his flat side rails barrier (1) to seek cover in about fifth spot as the field moved closer to the grandstand side of the course.

Andrew Mallyon switched him out and he took a narrow lead passing the 200m. He then fought gamely to score by a long neck, putting up a good first-up effort.

Pocket Rockets ($5.50) was ridden quietly by Damien Oliver who held him up for a late run, racing in about sixth place between runners. He angled into the clear at the 200m, briefly looked the winner and then battled on for (short neck) second after having every chance.

The favourite Kaiser Sun ($2.40) was in a good position, fourth behind runners, close to the grandstand side. He challenged at the 200m and seemed a strong threat before fighting on for a closed third.

Don’t Get Excited moved across from the flat side to race close to the lead from the 500m. He hit the lead at the 300m and kept on quite well for fourth while Undeniably ($51) made ground from near last to finish fifth beaten two and three quarter lengths.
