Say from SA – August 16

The well supported Riziz got the money for us at Morphettville last week winning the weight-for-age Spring Stakes.

Unfortunately the each way play, Brimming, finished out of the money when also well supported in the market.

This week we again race on the big Morphettville circuit where the rail is in the normal (read true) position and the track is rated a Dead5 at this stage.

Ultra-consistent performer Pistolier, prepared by Richard Jolly, should be hard to hold out in Race 4, the Cornerstone Stud Handicap over 1200m.

Pistolier led throughout when successful in a Benchmark 82 race last week – the same class he contests here – over 1050m with apprentice Jake Toeroek in the saddle.

He rises to the 1200m journey here and has draw barrier two, so he should get a good run in transit.

Toeroek again takes the ride and his 2kg claim brings him in with 55kg, 2kg more than he carried to victory last week.

Importantly the improving track is also a big plus in his advantage.

Hardest to beat will be Light It Up who is dropping back in grade following his last start second behind Riziz in the Spring Stakes at weight-for-age.

In Race 7, the Mill Park Stud Handicap, a Benchmark 82 race over 2014m, Tony McEvoy has two strong hopes in last start winner Pit Boss and Assertive Billy who has been racing on country tracks of late.

Getting on in years, Assertive Lad was successful at Port Augusta two starts back before carrying the steadier of 61kg into third place at Roxby Downs last time out.

Ronnie Stewart takes the ride on the nine-year-old and the Dead5 track is going to prove a bonus for the gelding.

Pit Boss is backing up from success in a Benchmark 82 race last week over 1600m after racing on the speed.

The extra 414m should not pose a concern and the gelding is going to be tough to hold out at the finish.

Good luck and good punting.
