Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants to sign players rather than lose any before Friday's transfer deadline as speculation continues over outgoings and a deal for Marc Guehi.
The Magpies have had a quiet window to date, bringing in the likes of Lloyd Kelly, William Osula and John Ruddy as well as making Lewis Hall's loan permanent.
Odysseas Vlachodimos also arrived from Nottingham Forest but has yet to feature in a matchday squad, including away to his former club in Wednesday's Carabao Cup second-round tie.
Newcastle set up a third-round trip to AFC Wimbledon by winning 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1, with talk quickly turning to transfers ahead of Friday's deadline.
"Honestly I've got no idea (if players could leave)," boss Howe said.
"I certainly wouldn't want to be losing too many players without replacing them, if any, because our squad isn't as big as people would expect.
"So, we have got to be very careful before letting players go."
Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier have been among those to be linked away with a move towards the end of a window that has seen Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh exit.
Howe is more interested in bolstering the squad after their unbeaten start to the campaign, with a well-documented pursuit of England defender Guehi rumbling on.
The 24-year-old starred at Euro 2024 and Crystal Palace are reported to be looking at a fee of around £70million for the centre-back.
Asked if it gets to a stage with transfer deals where you walk away, boss Howe said: "Of course.
"I have got no update for you, I know nothing from today. I've been concentrating on the game.
"But of course, yeah, but I will find out what is happening."
Forest are also hoping to be active before the deadline.
They have been far more active and four players made debuts on Wednesday, but Nuno Espirito Santo wants more fresh faces.
Asked if he expects it to be a busy time before Friday night, the Portuguese said: "Yeah, until the end.
"Until the end we're going to be alert, and if it's possible, yes, I think we still need a couple of options.
"We have been linked to so many (players). You know better than me that now is crazy. It's crazy. Much of the information is not true, but we need options I think.
"There's still two or three days to go, and we are working. Hopefully we can bring (in new players)."
