Broadmarsh trainer Sarah Cotton may have unearthed a potential star with first starter Fairy Magic scoring a brilliant win in the Mcdonald’s maiden 1200m, in Hobart on Sunday.
In Brief
- Cotton hopes for mare is up to Bow Mistress quality.
- Music Addition continues stables hot recent streak.
- Baker and Brunton back-to-back double.
The filly took up the lead not long after the start and raced away to win by more than five lengths with interstate jockey Lizzie Annells picking up the ride after Siggy Carr was forced to miss the meeting due to Covid 19.
Fair Magic (Rich Enuff x Astriege) was turned out a treat by Cotton and mounting yard onlookers could easily have specked the long shot who trimmed up from an opening quote of $41 to start $21.
"We bought her as a yearling from Glenlogan Park Stud, she was a hard filly to break-in, very headstrong but I do all the work on her, I own most of her so I'm in a very good headspace," the young trainer said excitedly. "I do have a good opinion of her and I'm hoping she may be a Bow Mistress (group three race) mare," she added.
However, luck changed for the worse for the pair a little later when Sarah Cotton's promising 4yo Make A Decision was a late scratching after dislodging the jockey at the barrier. Annells was taken to hospital and the remaining races were delayed.
Earlier Music Addition made a one-act affair of the Open Hcp, scoring easily and making it two wins and a second from three starts since arriving at Glenn Stevenson's Wesley Vale stable.
"We will just take him through the rating races, we don't really want to take him to the synthetic so if there's if there's something on down here that's what we'll do," Stevenson said after the race.
Music Addition has now won seven races from 37 starts and took his prize money past $560,000. The win continued a hot streak for the stable which has been consistently landing winners for the past couple of months.
Promising apprentice Chelsea Baker is making the most of her opportunities with leading trainer Scott Brunton. The pair combined for a race-to-race double with I'm Back storming down the outside to win the A-Maze-In Richmond class one, 1200m and Kuroset benefiting from a rail-hugging ride to take out the Graham Family Funerals BM 62, 1200m.
"It wasn't the initial plan, to be honest, she jumped beautifully but we kept getting boxed in. Plan one went out the window, plan two went out the window, I saw the opportunity and I thought I'm just going to have to go for it, if it didn't pay off it didn't, " the young jockey explained. But the move paid off brilliantly and Kuroset raced away by 2.5 lengths from Pristine Image and Zagame.
