Redkirk Warrior Nominated For Sussex Stakes

Australian star Redkirk Warrior has been nominated for the G1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in August, indicating that he may have an extended campaign in the UK over the northern summer.

The £1 million Qatar Sussex Stakes will be run at Goodwood on Wednesday with the Group One mile event attracting 46 entries from five countries including Australia and the US.

The Sussex Stakes is a highlight of the five-day Goodwood Festival and is the peak G1 mile race at wfa over the summer months.

Redkirk Warrior, trained at Lindsay Park by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, will be flown to the UK next week to prepare for the King's Stand Stakes/Diamond Jubilee Stakes over the straight five and six furlongs courses at Royal Ascot on June 23.

The July Cup, also over the straight six at Newmarket, is also on his agenda due to his outstanding record in races on straight courses. The Sussex Stakes is run on the tricky turning Goodwood course.

Redkirk Warrior was last seen at Flemington on March 10 when he won his second successive G1 Newmarket Handicap over 1200m.

The seven-year-old started his career in UK at longer distances with Newmarket trainer William Haggas, scoring over 10 furlongs at Yarmouth and Ascot before being sold to race in Hong Kong and eventually finding his way to Australia.

Other Sussex Stakes entries include the US G1 winner Yoshida, trained by Bill Mott, multiple G1 winner Rhododendron, and the cream of the current 3YO crop in Europe including the 2000 Guineas winner and Derby favourite Saxon Warrior, French 2000 Guineas winner Olmedo and Irish 2000 Guineas winner Romanised.
