Spieth, trained by Bryce Heys and ridden by Sam Clipperton, showed a fine turn of foot to blitz the field in the Merman and Sydeston Bm 78 Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
It was the second win in succession for Spieth after a 5L romp at Kembla Grange over 1200m on May 3rd and Warwick Farm based Heys was then ready to bring Spieth back to town.
Heys has twice send Spieth to contest black type without results so the path back through the grades has paid dividends that should get even better with further racing.
For Me Dad and apprentice Winona Costin led into the main straight with Clipperton sitting quietly further back in the field. King’s Troop and Brenton Avdulla came through on the inside to take over, but it was momentary as the moment Clipperton was clear with 100m to run the race was over.
Spieth exploded when Clipperton let him go racing in the middle of the track and even though the colt still has a high head carriage in his sixth race he had much too speed for the field. Clipperton was content to give Spieth a couple of reminders, but in the main rode hands and heels and then eased as they went past the line with 1 3/4L to spare.
King’s Troop and Avdulla were second with Pioneering and Christian Reith in third, the margin 1L.
The time was 1.03.17 on the Good 3 track with the final 600m in a smart 33.45. Spieth paid $2.50 on both fixed odds and the tote as the favourite.
“1200m back to 1100m and up in grade, it was a good effort,” said Heys.
“I was really concerned about being back to 1100m today, but it played out well. A nice horse and they spread out across the field and he probably needs another one of those at 1200m which would be ideal.
“He has a vicious turn of foot which is what is going to hold him in good stead going forward and as he goes up in grade that is what he is going to need. He is just improving with racing, he paraded immaculately and it is just about maintaining him as he is not a horse you can work much at home so he does need the racing,” he said.
“He is a very impressive horse. Bryce and connections have a lovely horse on their hands,” said Clipperton.
“Like I said he could not have been more impressive today, he handed himself really well and settled well. He still has a lot of learning to do and there is a lot of upside and he is going on to bigger and better things. He is going to get better with racing and he will learn,” he said.
